Happy Fourth of July: A Proposed 2022 Concert
I thought I'd celebrate this holiday with a little imaginary concert program of American music. I sort of think of this as "if I had a pops orchestra to conduct what would a concert look like?".
Here is my 2022 July Fourth "Pops" Concert
First Half:
Dudley Buck's: Festival Overture on "The Star-Spangled Banner" (7 minutes) I have no idea why this is not on holiday programs as you can't get much more patriotic than this.
Peggy Stuart Coolidge: Pioneer Dances (12 minutes)
I have always loved Coolidge's music and it is a shame it is not on more programs.
William Grant Still: Serenade (7 Minutes)
A stunning work by a great composer.
Gershwin: "I Got Rhythm" Variations (7 Minutes)
A little jazzier music with something familiar to glom onto.
Michael Daugherty: Route 66 (7 minutes)
Something new and exciting to introduce this composer to audiences.
Morton Gould: American Salute (5 minutes)
A more popular piece to rouse things up for contrast.
Intermission
Celebrating John Williams 90th Birthday year!
John Williams
"The Cowboys": Overture (10 minutes)
The Patriot: Main Theme (6 Minutes)
Lincoln: With Malice Toward None (5 Minutes)
Far and Away: End Credits (7 Minutes)
1941: March (4 Minutes)
L. Bernstein: West Side Story Suite (10 minutes)
Neil Diamond: They're Coming To America (5 minutes)
Sousa: The Stars and Stripes Forever (4 minutes)
So there you go--a little concert program that works for this year with some unique music along the way. I suspect it would be a pretty good program for this year anyway.
